FAMILY: Escalloniaceae Escallonia family
BOTANICAL NAME: Ixerba brexioides
MĀORI NAME: TĀWARI; whākou (Best 1908), whāwhākou. Latter terms used for tree particularly when in flower.
FOOD: Whākou, along with pōānanga (Clematis) and rātā blossom said to produce the best honey (Best 1908).
DYES: Bark of whāwhākou used for dyeing flax samples black. (Matina of Henui, Flax Exhibition Catalogue 1871)
